A new favorite heroine

Tonight the family watched "The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler". It is a beautiful and heartbreaking movie about a young nurse during World War II. She lived in Warsaw, Poland, and worked with the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto. Through her, 2500 Jewish children were smuggled out of the ghetto before the Nazis emptied it and loaded everyone onto the trains. Some of the children were placed with Polish families, and some were placed in convents. Eventually Irena Sedler was caught and tried by the Nazis.

Because of her daring work, she was tortured by the Nazis for 3 months and sentenced to execution. Fortunately, a Nazi soldier "on the inside" helped her escape on her way to be executed.

In 2007, at the age of 97, Irena Sendler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work during and after the war. I feel she definitely deserved, completely and wholeheartedly, to win this prize. However, the committee for the NPP thought Al Gore deserved it more. That's another conversation for another day, but I won't discuss it here.

Here is the link to where you can find out more about the movie:

  1. yeah...they're trying to make the NPP something sexy and famous--so they get a celebrity, instead of someone who truly earned it.
