New bedtime routine

Lately I've been feeling disappointed in our lack of family scripture study. I've been trying to figure out WHEN we could fit scripture study into our daily schedule. In the church's worldwide leadership training in February, one of the leaders said you should make family scripture time short and to the point when there are little children involved, so it doesn't turn into a nightmare every time with terribly bored kids fighting and running around.

SO, thinking about all of that, I came up with a solution. As part of our bedtime routine, we normally have a song and prayer together every night right before the kids climb into bed. I decided this routine would be the best place to add scripture study. Our bedtime routine now consists of reading ONE verse of scripture with brief explanation and/or commentary, and then the usual song and prayer.

I have a 'scripture-a-day' book that goes with the Book of Mormon, which I got from Deseret Book, and we've been using that with our scripture study. I understand that there are also 3 other books from the same author that go with the Old & New Testaments and the Doctrine & Covenants. I hope to add those books to our collection soon.

I feel very good about adding some kind of scripture study to our daily family activities. Yes, it's very short, and the kids probably don't understand the verses all the time. But that's not the point! The point is to follow the counsel of the Lord to "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6) Establish the habit now when they're little, and work on comprehension later.
