The dessert that didn't happen

We recently acquired an old ice cream maker from a friend who was
cleaning out their garage, and tonight we decided to make ice cream
for Family Home Evening. Dan found a really simple recipe that called
for milk, sugar, and vanilla. Great! We thought. We have those
things! So we got all the kids in the kitchen, and mixed together 8
cups of 2% milk, 2 cups of sugar, and about 2 tablespoons worth of
vanilla, and let the kids stir it all up. Then, after reading the
ancient manuscript that came with this machine, assembled the few
pieces, poured in the concoction, and plugged it in.

Nothing happened.

Dan took the motor off of the top of the bucket and examined it. We
could hear the motor humming, but nothing was moving, and we didn't
see any reset button or anything useful to push, slide, switch, or slam.

We had just infused 8 CUPS OF MILK with sugar and packed it with 10
POUNDS of ice! What could we do?

After a quick and heated debate over our plight, Dan decided to stir
the ice cream by hand. The paddle that goes inside the canister had a
small piece that stuck up out of the lid, and was supposed to connect
into the motor. We decided to turn that little knob-thingy by hand to
spin the paddle, and when the concoction got thick, we got a small
wrench to use as a lever.

So we proceeded to spin..and spin..and spin..and spin. Everyone
joined in, with the wrench and without, for almost an hour. We added
more ice and salt around the canister, poured water into the bucket
to ensure a uniform temperature, and we kept spinning. At the end of
the hour, we realized that the paddle was still spinning just about
as easily as it had been when we started. So with great trepidation,
we lifted the lid and pulled out the paddle, and Voila! Really cold
milk infused with a whole lot of sugar!

At that point we threw the paddle into the sink, stuck the lid back
on, and shoved the entire canister into the freezer. Before we shut
the door, we pulled out 5 popsicles for everyone. Maybe in a couple
days we will have the world's largest sweetened milk popsicle.

  1. before that's completely frozen stick some puree'd peaches in it (or pineapple chunks) and then it will be even yummier!

sorry to hear the maker was a dud though.

  2. The first time we used our ice cream maker, 8 years ago, we didn't read the instructions all the way and didn't realize we needed to freeze the bowl (it's one of the new ones that doesn't need salt). We ended up with a lot of sweet liquid, too.

I wonder if every family has to have an ice cream maker disaster at some point in their lives.
